The Karbi people primarily reside in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, which is their traditional homeland. However, they also inhabit other districts in Assam,Dima Hasao, Golaghat and Nagaon districts. The population of the Karbi tribe in Assam is estimated to be around 511,732 people.
The Karbi's mainly speak their native language, Karbi language, Amri language.Karbi traditional houses typically reflect their close relationship with nature and their agrarian lifestyle. Their houses are often constructed using locally available materials such as bamboo, thatch, and wood. These houses are raised on stilts to protect them from floods during the monsoon season. The interiors are usually simple, with separate areas for cooking, eating, and sleeping.
The Karbi people lead a primarily agrarian lifestyle, with agriculture forming the backbone of their economy. They engage in subsistence farming, cultivating crops such as rice, maize, millet, and vegetables. Farming tasks are often communal, with families working together in the fields.
Apart from agriculture, many Karbi people also engage in activities such as animal husbandry, fishing, and handicrafts. The Karbi people have a rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in their traditional attire, music, dance, and festivals. Traditional Karbi attire includes colorful woven garments adorned with intricate designs. Music and dance play an essential role in Karbi culture, with various traditional instruments like drums and flutes accompanying lively performances during festivals and ceremonies.
The Karbi tribe predominantly resides in the hill areas of Assam, particularly in the Karbi Anglong district and parts of nearby regions. Their settlements are often located in close proximity to forests and agricultural land, allowing them to maintain a symbiotic relationship with nature. The Karbi community is traditionally organized into clans, with each clan tracing its lineage back to a common ancestor. Social cohesion is maintained through mutual cooperation and support within the community. Elders hold significant influence and are respected for their wisdom and experience.
