The Deoris are mainly found in  Sadiya, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Sonitpur districts of Assam. They primarily cultivate crops such as rice, maize, millet, pulses, and vegetables.

Traditional farming methods, including slash-and-burn cultivation (known as jhum cultivation), are prevalent, although modern techniques are gradually being adopted. The agricultural calendar follows seasonal cycles, with activities like sowing, transplanting, weeding, and harvesting being carried out communally. Traditional Deori houses are typically made of bamboo, thatch, and wood. These structures are raised on stilts to protect against flooding during the monsoon season. The houses are usually spacious, with separate areas for cooking, living, and sleeping. In recent years, there has been a transition towards more modern construction materials, but many Deori families still maintain their traditional dwellings. Apart from agriculture, the Deori people engage in various other livelihood activities to sustain themselves. Fishing, hunting, and gathering from the forests supplement their food sources. Small-scale animal husbandry, such as rearing poultry, pigs, and goats, also contributes to their livelihood. Additionally, some Deoris are involved in handicrafts like bamboo weaving, pottery, and basketry, which serve both economic and cultural purposes. The Deori society is traditionally organized into clans or lineages, with each lineage tracing its descent from a common ancestor. These kinship ties form the basis of social cohesion and mutual support within the community. Elders hold significant authority and are revered for their wisdom and experience. Decision-making processes often involve consultation with community leaders and elders.
